5th Grade Curriculum
Overview:
In this project, the objective was to create a curriculum for a 5th grade class. Ms.Vogl's sister was interested in getting new ideas to incorporate into the new curriculum. Technology was something that she was interested in using during class. Through brainstorming within our groups, we were able to come up with some activities and lesson plans that would not only interest the 5th graders, but help them learn the required topics in the new curriculum. Being STEM students we decided to make our curriculum more hands on activities, in order to help meet the level of interest 5th graders need to want to learn more. Below, is the 5th grade lesson plan my group and I made. The over all goal was to create a lesson plan for 5 weeks, as you will see here.

Reflection:
In this project, we followed the California State Standards and created a curriculum we believed would truly interest 5th graders. While creating the curriculum we payed attention to the needs of the students. We took a survey in order to see what the kids were interested in. It was hard to fulfill all the standards and keep the activities hands on the whole time. For our group I believe that creativity could of been improved upon, as well as having patients. It was hard for me especially to have patients in creating and finding all the materials needed. We were able to learn from this experience being a teacher is a very difficult job. Creating the lesson plans fro the year can be time consuming, and difficult to create.
As I stated before, we struggled with creativity and patients at first, but these struggles led to the most amazing parts of our projects. We created element battleship. It is a great game to play, always keeping the kids entertained. It also is a great way to get the kids to learn about the periodic table with out them realizing its a learning experience and not a game. Our second amazing part was element bingo. Through this game the same task is able to be achieved as the battleship game. But through the bingo, they can learn specifically about each element itself.
In the process of creating the curriculum my group started by researching games, and labs for the curriculum. After we did that, we found ways to take notes that would interest the kids. WE also included videos from Bill Nye the science guy, because in a survey we gave to the kids, they wanted to watch videos to learn. Since the kids wanted certain activities and ways of learning, we made sure to incorporate them in our project.
In this project, I had a fun time creating and coming up with ideas on how to interest and educate the students. This project was over all eye opening in the experience of teachers. In the beginning I was skeptical in how this was going to work, but in the end i believe we were successful, and I was proud of what we had accomplished.
