Our project consisted of ten steps, five of which were simple machines. The simple machines included the wheel and axle, inclined plane, the pulley, the lever, and the screw. For each step we applied the physics equations to correspond with it. Through this assignment I learned how physics and mathematics work together. The types of equations we used were mechanical advantage, potential energy, and acceleration. Mechanical advantage to see how we made our task easier by putting our input over the output.Potential energy is motion that is built up from a high or low position; an example would be the inclined plane. Kinetic energy is the energy from motion. Force is mass times acceleration, and to find acceleration, we divided the acceleration due to gravity, which is 9.8 meters per second squared, and the mechanical advantage. We used potential energy One of the most difficult task besides building the machine was making the diagram. The schematic diagram had to be so precise and perfect that it took time and patience to create. Although, it was difficult we all worked together and made the perfect diagram. This is shown in the slide show if you would please click on the file below.
There were many ups and downs in our project. Two positive examples of our machine would be having our design work when we built it and having all the mechanics work. The two negatives would be when the mechanics failed and having our equations set up wrong the first time through. After 30 trials and error; we were finally able to execute the project.
Without hard work and dedication this project would not have been successful. There are many things we could of worked on and improved on, but my group was over all happy with the results we made. For myself I feel that I could of had more patience at times when our machine didn't work. Also,I feel that I could have chose better materials to put into our machine. These are my goals to work on for my next project;I hope to fulfill them. All in all, this project helped me learn new things about myself; and learning the correlation of physics and engineering.
